Sedation Dentistry

In certain cases, our experts may decide to use methods of sedation when providing treatment. This practice consists of using special medication to help a patient relax and experience less anxiety and pain while our dental care specialists do their work. The use of sedation is incredibly safe, and our process is heavily monitored in order to keep the patient safe and to prevent them from experiencing any side effects.

Different types of sedation are available, and the type that is used generally depends on the intensity of the procedure and the needs of the patient. Our levels of sedation range from a slight relaxation effect, all the way to rendering the patient unconscious.

Some common dental procedures that may warrant the use of sedation include:

  • Tooth Extractions
  • Root Canal Treatment
  • Dental Implant Procedures
  • Periodontal Services

At Smile Dental Care, we offer the following types of sedation:

  • Oral Sedation: Oral sedation consists of a pill that is taken by the mouth in order to provide minimal to moderate sedation. This type of sedation will help a patient relax, and it will allow them to better deal with any pain during treatment. When receiving this type of sedation, a patient should feel somewhat drowsy, but still largely aware of what is going on around them.
  • IV Sedation: This type of sedation is injected into a person’s vein in order to provide moderate to high levels of sedation. IV sedation will go into effect quickly, and it can be continuously adjusted to provide the patient with the appropriate level of sedation. Although the patient will be conscious, they will most likely not be aware of their surroundings; however, they should return to normal shortly after the procedure has been completed.
  • General Anesthesia: When general anesthesia is used, the patient will be entirely unconscious. This type of sedation is typically used when it is best that the patient remains asleep throughout the entire procedure. This will prevent the patient from experiencing any pain, making it possible for us to conduct an extensive treatment without subjecting the patient to discomfort. Afterwards, the patient will have no memory of the procedure whatsoever.
  • Local Anesthesia: Strictly for pain management, a local anesthetic is applied directly to the site of the dental procedure in order to provide a numbing effect. This will prevent the patient from experiencing pain while work is performed. Although a local anesthetic can be a great way to assist a patient in dealing with pain, this type of sedation is not designed to reduce anxiety in any way; however, simply knowing that a local anesthetic is being used may help to provide a patient with comfort.

Our Happy Patients

"When it comes to going to the dentist I'm not going to lie, I get anxiety. But as soon as I walked in everyone was so nice, to the girl who took my xrays, to Cyndi who cleaned my teeth, and to the dentist. They made me feel comfortable which was a big plus! Big thanks to Cyndi for being so patient with me, especially being the last person to be seen today. She explained my plan in detail to make sure I understood everything. Definitely would recommend this place!"
